How much C sequestration can organic amendments achieve?

In part 7, “Soil amendments”  David Powlson from Rothamsted Research and Rebecca Ryals from UC Merced will share case studies from the U.K. and the U.S. on the impacts of manure and compost amendments on soil carbon sequestration in agricultural ecosystems.

Time: November 30th, 3:00 PM Eastern.

Dr. Rebecca Ryals is an Assistant Professor at University of California, Merced. Her research program focuses on ecosystem-based climate solutions, particularly in agricultural and sanitation contexts. A major research theme is the capture, transformation, and beneficial reuse of organic wastes as resources to rebuild soil carbon and contribute to a more productive and just food system.

Dr. David Powlson has spent most of his career studying organic matter cycling in agricultural soils. His work has benefitted from the long-term experiments at Rothamsted Research, the longest running now being 178 years old. After retiring from Rothamsted Research, where he was Head of the Soil Science Department, he was appointed as a Lawes Trust Senior Fellow and has collaborated with scientists in China and in the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT). He is a Past-President of the British Society of Soil Science and contributed to early IPCC reports. He is currently Visiting Professor in Soil Science at the University of Reading, UK, and the Southwest University, Chongqing, China. He has a B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of East Anglia and a Ph.D. in Soil Science from the University of Reading and is author or co-author of over 160 papers in peer-reviewed journals.
