Which emerging approaches can enable widespread soil C measurement and monitoring?
In Webinar 2, “Measuring Soil C”, Cristine Morgan from the Soil Health Institute and Jonathan Sanderman from the Woodwell Climate Research Center will share their experiences developing approaches to quantify soil carbon that could enable widespread C measurement and monitoring.
Time: July 13th, 3:00 pm Eastern.
Dr. Jonathan Sanderman is an Associate Scientist with the Woodwell Climate Research Center, where he studies the role that soils can play in climate mitigation and sustainable food production. Prior to joining the Woodwell Center, Dr. Sanderman was a senior research scientist and team leader with Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO. Dr. Sanderman studies processes that add, remove, and transform carbon in soils, in ecosystems ranging from coastal marshes to tropical forests and working farmlands. He has helped to develop national soil carbon inventories and strategies for soil climate mitigation, and has developed mid-infrared spectrometry methods for widespread soil carbon quantification.
Dr. Cristine Morgan is Chief Scientific Officer for the Soil Health Institute, where she works with diverse partners to shape agricultural solutions to global existential challenges. She holds adjunct faculty status at Texas A&M University, where she was a tenured professor and recognized for innovative research in soil hydrology, pedometrics, and global soil security. Dr. Morgan has conducted ground-breaking research on how management practices influence soil-plant-water relations. She has also developed methods that were adopted by USDA for easily measuring soil carbon. Dr. Morgan was recognized as a Fellow of the Soil Science Society of America in 2020, the Society’s highest honor.
